PartyPoker Million V Day 4

Day 4: Wednesday, March 15, 2006
You might notice that I’ve skipped a day of writing. There
is a very simple explanation for this….nothing exciting happened. If I could
put a title on yesterday at sea it would be “BAD BEAT STORY DAY.” Tournament
players were dropping like flies in the later part of yesterday. By dinnertime
all you could hear around you were tales of poker hell. Extraordinary flops,
people getting rivered left and right….you know what I mean…
But today, a new beautiful day on LAND! It was a fantastic
feeling to get off the boat finally and to feast my eyes on the lush vegetation
of Ochos Rios, Jamaica mon! T.K. and I chose a horse riding expedition that
promised that we would ride from the mountains to the sea and then swim with our
horsies. After a 20 minute shuttle around the island (I wouldn’t necessarily
say we went up any mountains), we found ourselves at a huge farm complete with
several tick-infested lazy farm dogs. While we were waiting to be fit to
horses, we had time to shop at the gift shop and drink at the outdoor bar
(pretty touristy farm, eh?!) I finally got called on to ride “Superior” who,
for whatever reason, couldn’t keep his head still. I had the sneaky suspicion
that his harness was fitted wrong (or something like that—I really know very
little about horses). T.K. rode “Imagination,” named after another cruise
ship. We got on our way, weaving down a windy path and taking in the view of
beautiful mountainside and a turquoise bay. When we finally got to the sea, we
had to dehorse for a moment while our trusty friends got redressed for the
water. We were invited to drink more (from a second bar) and strip down to our
bathing suits in preparation for our ride into the ocean.
I guess I had envisioned swimming in the ocean while our
horses sort of followed us into knee deep water. What we got was much more
exhilarating! The horses got fit with life-jacket-looking vests and we jumped
on---giving us a feeling of bareback riding. The bartender prepped us, “if the
horses pee, it is called fish beer. If they do number 2, it is called fish
food.” Hmmmmm….yum… And then we were off. The ranch hands made all kinds of
funny noises to get our horses walking and then SWIMMING in the water. These
horses were bookin’ it in the deeper water. We got wet to our waists, holding
on for dear life as these beautiful creatures grouped together and swam round
and round in the bay. Unfortunately, we couldn’t altogether avoid the “fish
food.” A horse has got to go when a horse has to go!
Back on dry land, we got to look at several digital
pictures that some skilled Jamaicans in a row boat had snapped while we were in
the water. I don’t think I saw anyone without a huge smile on their face!
After a little socializing and picture-buying, we saddled back up for the ride
back to the main ranch. Superior had decided that he got union breaks as he
stopped every several minutes to chomp at some grass or other greenery. At one
point, he kicked another horse for getting too close to him. It didn’t surprise
me that I ended up with the trouble-maker horse! T.K.’s horse ended up being a
perfect gentleman.
Our shuttle took us back to the dock, and we boarded the
“bad beat boat” once again. I’m looking forward to another day of fun tomorrow
once we reach the Caymans!
